LANCASTER, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say someone apparently set fire to an historic covered bridge in central Ohio, causing about $20,000 in damage to a structure that's more than 130 years old.

The Lancaster Eagle-Gazette (http://ohne.ws/13CngFY ) reports a passer-by told police he spotted the fire Tuesday at the bridge on Ohio University's branch campus in Lancaster. The police report indicated he tried to extinguish the blaze before reporting it.

The structure is known as the John Bright No. 2 Covered Bridge. It originally spanned a creek near Carroll but was moved to the campus 25 years ago to be preserved.

Campus authorities say the fire left two large holes in the original deck, and an inspection will be needed to determine the full extent of the damage. The school plans to pay for repairs.
