NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island officials say one person is being treated for rabies exposure after an unprovoked attack by a raccoon in North Kingstown.
The state Department of Environmental Management said the person was bitten around 6:30 p.m. Monday on Heritage Road, off of Post Road. Two dogs were also bitten.
Officials have tried unsuccessfully to capture the raccoon. It is presumed to be infected with rabies because its behavior is not typical.
Residents who see any wildlife acting strangely are asked to report it to DEM and North Kingstown Animal Control.
It wasn't immediately clear if the dogs had been vaccinated against rabies. Under state law, dogs, cats and ferrets must get rabies shots.
