Man sues Ore. police department for injuries, slur

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) — A man of Japanese descent alleges in a federal court lawsuit that Cottage Grove police beat him and used a racial slur in a 2010 arrest.

The Eugene Register-Guard reports (http://bit.ly/UKUxs9 ) the suit filed by Matthew Susumu Waggoner says his treatment resulted in a knee injury worsened by the department's refusal to provide medical treatment during his four days in jail.

Police responding to a report of a possible burglary saw him 100 yards from the house and ran toward him. The suit says an officer hit him on the knee with a baton.

The suit says Waggoner was held on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, but the charges were later dropped.

Police Chief Michael Grover had no comment.

The suit seeks punitive damages and medical cost compensation.
