Flu season just getting started in Nevada

Friday January 11, 2013 6:15 AM

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — The Nevada Health Division has confirmed 22 cases of influenza in Nevada, and officials warn the season is just getting started.

Health officials on Thursday said the number of confirmed cases is up 57 percent from only two weeks ago and the numbers continue to increase.

State Health Officer Dr. Tracy Green says it's too early to say which influenza virus will predominate this season or how severe the season will be in Nevada.

But she says the predominant virus right now is H3N2, which tends to bring higher numbers of deaths and hospitalizations.

Green is urging everyone 6 months of age and older to get a flu shot. People should also wash their hands frequently to try to reduce their risk of becoming ill.
