Report: 55 show flu symptoms at OR elder facility

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) — Health officials say 55 people at a Springfield, Ore., assisted living facility have reported flu-like symptoms and six cases of flu have been confirmed.

Lane County chief health officer Dr. Patrick Luedtke has told the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that 19 people from Emeritus at Springfield — The Briarwood have visited a hospital and 13 have been admitted.

The doctor's report says 138 people live at the facility and 57 work there. Reporting symptoms were 46 residents and nine staffers.

County Health and Human Services spokesman Jason Davis tells The Register-Guard (http://is.gd/WgRReE ) that "this is not about this one facility" but is an example of how quickly the virus can spread when people are in close proximity.

Briarwood Executive Director Jessica Knox says the facility is taking precautions and she believes the worst is over. She says an on-site clinic offered vaccines to residents but many decided against getting a flu shot.
