PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A federal jury in Philadelphia is hearing from attorneys for several reputed mobsters charged in a wide-ranging racketeering case.
Friday marks the second day of closing arguments in the trial of seven defendants including reputed acting mob boss Joseph "Uncle Joe" Ligambi. The jury is expected to start deliberations Tuesday.
The trial started in mid-October and revolves around allegations of illegal gambling, extortion and loansharking.
A lawyer for reputed mob capo Joseph "Scoops" Licata told jurors Friday that the government hasn't proven that the men were involved in organized crime.
Attorney Christopher Warren says prosecution witnesses weren't truthful, and secretly taped conversations of his client don't prove any wrongdoing.
Prosecutors allege the mobsters ran their criminal enterprise like a corporation and used threats and violence to build the business.
