NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — About 56,000 Sentara Healthcare patients could be affected by the theft of a device containing some of their personal information.
Media outlets report that contractor Omnicell Inc. is notifying patients of the potential data breach. Mountain View, Calif.-based Omnicell provides automated medication dispensing services for Sentara.
Omnicell says the device may have contained clinical and demographic data, such as information about medication usage during hospital stays and patient birth dates. The device didn't contain Social Security numbers, insurance information or financial information.
The device was stolen from an Omnicell employee's locked car in November.
Omnicell says the theft could affect people treated at seven Sentara hospitals and three outpatient care centers in Hampton Roads between Oct. 18 and Nov. 9.
