ELKTON, Md. (AP) — The Cecil County Sheriff's Office investigating the injury of a 10-year-old say the head injury may have been caused by celebratory gunshots fired to mark the new year.

Deputies were called to a home in Elkton about 12:10 a.m. Tuesday. Officials say a trauma injury was observed at the top of the girl's head.

Officers say witnesses reported several people were outside watching fireworks when the child collapsed. Residents said numerous gunshots were heard in the area at the start of the new year.

The girl, who was visiting relatives, was taken to A.I. Dupont Children's Hospital in Wilmington, Del., where deputies say she is in critical condition.

The incident is under investigation.
