Schatz to be sworn in as US senator for Hawaii

Thursday December 27, 2012 2:15 PM

HONOLULU (AP) — Incoming U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz will be sworn into office after being appointed by Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie and flying to Washington with President Barack Obama aboard Air Force One.

Schatz was expected to take the oath of office Thursday afternoon on Capitol Hill.

Schatz was Hawaii's lieutenant governor under Abercrombie. He headed Obama's 2008 election effort in the state.

His selection went against the dying wishes of U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye, whom Schatz replaces.

Inouye wanted U.S. Rep. Colleen Hanabusa to succeed him.
