WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Gov. Jack Markell is speaking out follwing the horrific school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

Markell said Tuesday that America has a culture of violence that is coupled with ready access to guns and a failure to help adolescents struggling with mental illness. He says the discussion in the wake of the Connecticut shooting needs to focus on mental health, school safety and gun laws.

Markell says his administration is working to expand access to mental health treatment, especially for children and teenagers, and that Delaware has a new statewide protocol for comprehensive school safety plans in every public school.

He also says he supports a ban on assault weapons with large magazines, and that he hopes there are measures that reasonable gun owners can agree with.
