WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. says North Korea's rocket launch in defiance of a U.N. ban has left it no option but to seek to further isolate the government.
State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland on Monday dismissed the notion of moving now to restart six-nation talks on the North's nuclear program. Talks have been stalled since 2009.
She said U.S. efforts last year to seek an opening with the North's young leader Kim Jong Un (kim jawng oon) were spurned through the North's launches of long-range rockets in April and last week. Nuland was referring to a February offer of food aid in exchange for a nuclear freeze and test moratorium.
The U.S. and allies are pushing for tighter sanctions in the U.N. Security Council. It's unclear if China will go along.
