PHILADELPHIA (AP) — University of Pennsylvania students taking a course about philanthropy and nonprofits are learning more than just theory.
The urban studies students actually gave away $100,000 at the end of the semester last week.
The money came from the Texas-based Once Upon A Time foundation. President Sam Lett says the goal is to teach students the importance of giving back "in a thoughtful manner."
The Ivy League school in Philadelphia is one of 13 U.S. colleges receiving such a grant this school year. Others include Harvard, Northwestern and the University of Chicago.
Penn students say they were excited and nervous to apply their learning in a real-world scenario.
They requested funding proposals from local nonprofits, conducted site visits and interviewed administrators before ultimately choosing grant recipients.
