EASTON, Pa. (AP) — A jury must now decide if it believes a former police officer who claims he passed out due to low blood sugar associated with gastric bypass surgery before he fatally struck a line of motorcyclists on a Pennsylvania road last year.
Jurors in the vehicular homicide trial of John Heaney III are weighing competing explanations for the crash that center on the retired Plainfield, N.J., police officer's weight loss surgery.
Prosecutors say it was alcohol that caused the July 2011 crash that killed Keith Michaelson, of West Milford, N.J. and Michael Zadoyko, of Pompton Lakes, N.J., and injured four others in Northampton County. They claim Heaney's surgery lowered his tolerance for the six alcoholic drinks he had that day.
Heaney's attorney says his client had a medical emergency.
