Ship strikes pier, leaks fuel near NW Ohio river

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says a 730-foot ship in northwest Ohio backed into a pier at a dock near the Maumee River, punctured a tank and leaked fuel into the water.

The Coast Guard says a Canadian bulk carrier hauling 27,000 tons of iron ore backed into a pier near Toledo on Tuesday morning. The crew immediately pumped fuel out of a punctured tank and into a different one to stop the leak.

It wasn't immediately clear how much fuel spilled. About 800 feet of oil containment boom was stretched out to contain the oil sheen.

No injuries were reported. The dock had minor damage.
