CLEVELAND (AP) — The county government in Cleveland is unloading a vacant but architecturally distinctive office tower complex for $27 million.
Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH'-guh) County spent $45 million to buy and clean up the Ameritrust complex. The Geis (geyes) Cos. will demolish part of the complex and build an office tower to be leased by the county.
The 28-story skyscraper designed by modernist architect Marcel Breuer (BROY'-ehr) will be converted into apartments. His credits include the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the 1971 wing of the Cleveland Museum of Art.
An earlier plan to demolish the tower led to sidewalk protests by preservationists.
County Executive Ed FitzGerald told The Plain Dealer (http://bit.ly/T5Eshm ) before Tuesday's official announcement that county workers will move to the leased space from eight other buildings.
