TUPELO, Miss. (AP) — A spokesman for U.S. Rep. Alan Nunnelee says the congressman is recovering from elective heart surgery.

Jordan Russell, Nunnelee's communications director, told the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (http://bit.ly/UAzTLQ ) on Tuesday that Nunnelee had successful heart valve replacement surgery on Monday. The operation was done at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.

Russell said the operation was done to correct a heart problem the 54-year-old Nunnelee has had since birth. A date for Nunnelee's return to work is not yet certain, but Russell said the Tupelo Republican anticipates being available to vote on any "fiscal cliff" issues that may come before the House in the next couple of weeks.
