NEW YORK (AP) — Former New York Mayor Ed Koch (kahch) is doing much better and is scheduled to be released from the hospital Monday.

He was admitted last week to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital with pneumonia and the flu.

Koch said through a spokesman on Friday that he was looking forward to celebrating his 88th birthday this week. It's on Wednesday. He'll be at an annual reunion with members of his administration at Gracie Mansion, the official mayor's residence.

Koch also was hospitalized in September. He was treated for anemia, was released after three days and said he planned to head straight to his office at a law firm.

Koch served three terms from 1978 to 1989. The Democrat is famous for asking constituents, "How'm I doing?"
