MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minnesota duo who snagged an unexpected Grammy nomination for best children's album says their inspiration comes from memories of growing up together in Colorado.
Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing are the Okee Dokee Brothers, a Minneapolis-based bluegrass band. Their album, "Can You Canoe?" is a set of acoustic songs inspired by a month-long paddle down the Mississippi River.
Mailander says when the pair started making music together, their memories of fishing, going to the creek and playing catch came out naturally.
They call the nomination a surprise because they identify themselves as "kindie" musicians — indie musicians who aim for a children's audience.
They plan another adventure album, perhaps from their plans to hike the Appalachian Trial next fall.
