Feds investigate after dialysis illnesses

TOWN AND COUNTRY, Mo. (AP) — Federal Medicare inspectors are conducting an investigation after eight patients were injected with a cleanser at a kidney dialysis center in St. Louis County.

The patients got sick Monday at the U.S. Renal Care facility in Town and Country. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/REWw4Y ) reports that seven were hospitalized. Two were originally critical but all are expected to recover.

Tom Weinberg of U.S. Renal Care says a cleaning solution was inadvertently added to the water supply due to what he called a "one-time human error."

The center, which is on the campus of the Cedars of Town and Country nursing home, is closed during the inspection. Nursing home residents who need dialysis are being treated elsewhere. Six of the patients who became ill live at the nursing home.
