TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A 27-year-old gang member from northwest Ohio is going to prison for life for gunning down a woman and her teenage son on their front steps last year.

Daurin Patton was sentenced to two consecutive life prison terms with no possibility of parole Monday in a Toledo courtroom. A jury had convicted him Friday after a weeklong trial.

The (Toledo) Blade (http://bit.ly/R3b9iz ) reports that Patton fatally shot 34-year-old Veronica Serrano and her 14-year-old son Timothy Blair. Prosecutors said the shooting occurred after a robbery involving Serrano's older son.

Patton maintained his innocence and expressed his desire to appeal the conviction and sentence. He apologized to the victims' family but said he was innocent.

Prosecutors said Patton was a member of a local gang called the Bagdad Boys.
