NEW YORK (AP) — A Portuguese model has been convicted of murder in the castration killing of a Portuguese TV personality in a hotel room in New York City's Times Square.

Twenty-three-year-old Renato Seabra (ren-AH'-toh say-AH'-brah) was convicted Friday of choking, bludgeoning and mutilating Carlos Castro.

Castro's bloodied body was found in January 2011. The 65-year-old Castro was also a writer.

Manhattan prosecutors say the two were a couple and Seabra was angry Castro had ended their relationship. Seabra's mother disputes the men were together.

The defense said Seabra was mentally ill. It said he believed he was on a mission to kill what he saw as the devil of homosexuality in Castro.

Seabra could face life in prison. His sentencing is set for Dec. 21.
