New members play lottery for office space

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep.-elect Julia Brownley of California has reason to cheer: She's a lottery winner.

No, Brownley didn't win the $588 million Powerball jackpot — she won the lottery held for the 70 newly-elected House freshmen to pick the best available office space on Capitol Hill.

Incoming members of Congress piled into a House office building on Friday for a lottery to select their new office space for next year.

In truth, none of the options are great. The best space is reserved for veteran lawmakers. But Brownley says she's pleased she has a location that's got a quick route to the House floor and "lots of space for interns."
