SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Salem residents are petitioning for water and soil testing in West Salem, where five youths have been diagnosed with a rare bone cancer over the past four years

Among the victims was Lisa Harder, a senior and homecoming queen at West Salem High School who died earlier this month.

The Salem Statesman Journal reports (http://stjr.nl/Ynb6zL) that state and federal health authorities are discussing the request.

An EPA spokesman said it has only recently heard about the concerns in West Salem.

One petition at West Salem High School has about 600 signatures. A second petition online has nearly 800.
