BAYPORT, N.Y. (AP) — Animal rescuers on Long Island say a "sweet," abused dog named Midnight will have to gain weight before she can undergo surgery for a broken leg.

The Suffolk County SPCA says the 1-year-old mixed breed was emaciated when she was rescued last Wednesday. She was found in a yard in Bellport.

The vet who will eventually perform the surgery, Dr. Dennis Dougherty, says Midnight suffered injuries from blunt force trauma.

She's now getting treatment at the Bayport Village Animal Health Center.

The Suffolk SPCA is raising funds to help with her care.
