TROY, Ohio (AP) — Authorities have arrested a couple charged with animal cruelty for allegedly leaving four Labrador Retriever-mix puppies near a western Ohio bridge.

Miami County authorities say the Piqua couple missed a court appearance Tuesday and were arrested and released on their own recognizance. Court records show 36-year-old Shonda Lee charged with animal cruelty and failure to license a dog and 29-year-old Steven Bixler charged with multiple counts of abandoning animals and animal cruelty.

The Dayton Daily News reports a deputy heard the puppies Nov. 9 and a car speeding away. The newspaper reports two puppies were dropped about 15 feet over a guard rail along the bank of the Great Miami River and two were on the roadside. None were seriously injured.

There were no telephone listings for Bixler or Lee.
