Big disappointment in brain injury treatment study

Tuesday November 20, 2012 4:15 PM

CHICAGO (AP) — Researchers are reporting disappointing news in the hunt for brain injury treatments.

A supplement sold as a memory booster and used overseas as a medical treatment didn't work in adults with traumatic brain injuries.

The supplement is called citicoline (see-tee-KOH'-leen). Scientists and the U.S. military had considered it a potentially promising treatment. But patients who got the supplement fared no better than those given dummy treatments.

Details of the study are in Wednesday's issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
