AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The commercialization chief of the state's $3 billion cancer-fighting fund will leave at the end of the month amid controversy over the integrity of its funding process.
Jerald S. Cobbs has been the chief commercialization officer of the Cancer Research and Prevention Institute of Texas for three years. In a Monday statement, CPRIT Executive Director Bill Gimson says Cobbs has submitted his intention to resign Nov. 30. According to Gimson, Cobbs believes he's achieved his objectives in establishing CPRIT's commercialization program and wants to move to the private sector.
The fund has been shaken by the resignations of two Nobel laureates and more than 30 peer reviewers who began to question the integrity of the funding process. Agency leaders have repeatedly denied politics guiding funding decisions.
