Girl: Convicted day care owner left babies alone

HOUSTON (AP) — A 7-year-old girl is telling jurors that a Texas woman convicted of murder in a deadly 2011 fire at her home day care once left several babies alone in the house while she took other children to a McDonald's.

The child testified Thursday during the punishment phase of Jessica Tata's trial. Jurors convicted Tata on Tuesday of one count of felony murder in one child's death in the fire and faces up to life in prison.

Brighton Long was in Tata's day care in 2010. She says Tata once took her and several other children to a McDonald's but left some babies she was watching home alone.

In all, four children died in the fire and three others were injured. Tata faces charges in those cases too.
