COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — State lawmakers have honored Ohio soldiers who died in U.S. combat operations last year.

The Ohio General Assembly on Thursday posthumously awarded 28 service members with the Ohio Military Medal of Distinction. The medal was created by law in 2009 to pay tribute to Ohioans who lost their lives fighting in overseas conflicts.

State law requires both chambers of the state Legislature to meet at least once a year to recognize medal recipients killed in the line of duty.

Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor and state leaders presented the medals to the soldiers' families at a ceremony at the Statehouse.
