CHICAGO (AP) — Former Illinois Department of Public Health Director Eric Whitaker plans to leave his job at the University of Chicago Medicine.

Whitaker has served as executive vice president of strategic affiliations and associate dean of community-based research since October 2007. The university on Thursday announced that Whitaker plans to leave on March 31.

Whitaker will serve on the advisory board at the University of Chicago Medicine's Urban Health Initiative as part of efforts to ensure a smooth transition.

Whitaker didn't specify what he plans to do next, but he says he remains committed to public health. The 47-year-old doctor headed the state's Public Health Department from 2003 to 2007.
