Eagle DA says cancer hoax may not violate law

EAGLE, Colo. (AP) — Eagle County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert says a woman's hoax about a boy with cancer that sparked an outpouring of community sympathy may not violate the law.

Authorities are investigating a 22-year-old Avon woman who told residents about a local boy who was terminally ill with leukemia. The woman has not been charged with any crime and she could not be reached for comment.

Hurlbert said Thursday investigators are trying to determine if the woman collected any money from the hoax.

A photo of the boy was traced back to a Kids Cancer Crusade website. He has been identified as Connor Gerber, a South African boy who is still alive.

According to the Vail Daily (http://tinyurl.com/b5dl9jv), a local radio station, a football team and community leaders offered their help.
