Former city councilman to run for Cincinnati mayor

CINCINNATI (AP) — Former city councilman John Cranley says he will run in Cincinnati's next mayoral election.

Cranley announced his plans for the 2013 race on Wednesday. Incumbent Mayor Mark Mallory isn't eligible to run after his second four-year term.

Like Mallory, Cranley is a Democrat. The Harvard-educated attorney was elected four times to city council. He twice unsuccessfully challenged Republican U.S. Rep. Steve Chabot (sha-BUHT').

Next year's race is expected to draw a crowded field, including Vice Mayor Roxanne Qualls. She is a Democrat and former mayor.
