WASHINGTON (AP) — The FBI is preparing a timeline of the criminal investigation that exposed CIA Director David Petraeus' extramarital affair so it can explain to lawmakers why they weren't notified of the probe months ago.

The White House wasn't informed of the FBI investigation until Election Day, and the head of the Senate Intelligence Committee says she first learned of the matter from the media late last week.

Last Friday, Petraeus acknowledged an affair with his biographer, Paula Broadwell, and resigned.

Part of the FBI investigation was still under way Monday in North Carolina, where agents conducted a search of Broadwell's home.

Also, the top American commander in Afghanistan is under investigation for alleged "inappropriate communications" with the woman who is said to have received threatening emails from Broadwell.
