GOP taps health care expert to run budget panel

Tuesday November 13, 2012 2:30 PM

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma is tapping a new Ways and Means chairman with an eye on dealing with health care costs in the coming years.

Bosma said Tuesday that Public Health Chairman Tim Brown would move over to take control of the budget-writing committee. State lawmakers will draw up Indiana's next two-year budget when they return for the 2013 session in January.

Bosma said Brown, a Crawfordsville physician, is uniquely qualified to examine the costs of the federal health care law. Brown says he will examine how other states are handling the law.

Bosma says he plans to discuss the health care law with Gov.-elect Mike Pence on Wednesday.

House Democrats say Indianapolis Rep. Greg Porter will be their ranking member on the budget panel.
