OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) — The state of New Jersey is defending its placement of about 200 storm evacuees in a large tent shelter after photos showed one shelter resident bundled in a blanket pulled over her head and others in winter coats, including a child in a stroller.
The photos were taken Wednesday by an evacuee who shared them with the Asbury Park Press (http://on.app.com/SV30vh ).
State Human Services spokeswoman Nicole Brossoie (BRUS'-wah) tells The Associated Press that the state bused the evacuees to the shelter in Oceanport after a nor'easter hit Wednesday, so they were wet and cold when they arrived.
The shelter resident who took the photos told the Press it was so cold the first night that evacuees could see their breath.
Brossoie says extra heaters were brought in.
