CHICAGO (AP) — Health officials in Illinois are investigating a second probable case of fungal meningitis tied to the use of a steroid injection from a Massachusetts pharmacy.
The Illinois Department of Public Health reported the new case Friday. Like the first reported Illinois case, the patient is a Chicago resident who received an injection at one of the three APAC Centers for Pain Management that received the recalled medication.
The New England Compounding Center in Massachusetts has now recalled all of its products going back to the first of the year. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation suspended the pharmacy's state license last month.
Nationally, 29 people have died in the outbreak of fungal meningitis. This type of meningitis is not contagious.
