SYDNEY (AP) — Former All Blacks center Sonny Bill Williams has had surgery in Sydney for a pectoral muscle tear he sustained during a match for his Japanese club on the weekend.
The 27-year-old Williams said in a Twitter post Wednesday, a day after arriving from Japan, that he'd spoken to his doctor and the operation was successful: "Thanks for the support. I've truly been blessed."
His Panasonic Wild Knights team is on a five-week break in the Japanese competition. It is expected that Williams, a part-time boxer, will have to postpone his planned Nov. 24 heavyweight fight with South Africa's Francois Botha.
Williams, earning a reported $1.2 million for playing 12 matches in Japan, is expected to return to Australia's National Rugby League in 2013.
