RI has 1st case of fungal meningitis in outbreak

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island health officials report the state's first case of fungal meningitis in a nationwide linked to steroid injections prepared by a Massachusetts pharmacy.

The Rhode Island Department of Health on Monday says a woman in her 40s is hospitalized and receiving treatment. It says she got a spinal injection at Ocean State Pain Management of Woonsocket on Sept. 22.

Ocean State Pain Management and New England Anesthesiology were the two Rhode island facilities that received the suspect medications from New England Compounding Center.

The health department says 266 people received injections from three affected lots.

More than 330 people have been sickened in the nationwide outbreak and 25 have died.
