PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo says the state is on the offensive against illegal drug use, but says the fight is ongoing as drug pushers shift their tactics in response to successful new anti-drug initiatives.
The Prestonsburg Democrat says as quickly as one source for illegal drugs dries up, another opens. He says state lawmakers will remain vigilant in the fight.
Stumbo made the remarks Monday in advance of an anti-drug forum in eastern Kentucky featuring a bipartisan panel of top state officials.
Stumbo credits a new state law with closing nearly a dozen pain management clinics and boosting use of the state's prescription monitoring system. The law is aimed at curtailing prescription drug abuse in a state where more people have died from prescription overdoses than from car crashes.
