AKRON, Ohio (AP) — Electric utilities that make up the East Coast operating areas of Ohio-based FirstEnergy Corp. are preparing for the worst from Hurricane Sandy.

The hurricane brought heavy rain and wind to the Caribbean during the past week. In the coming days it could affect an 800-mile area from the East Coast to the Great Lakes.

Akron-based FirstEnergy, with six million customers in six states, asked customers to take all necessary precautions.

The White House says people living along the Eastern Seaboard should monitor weather reports and listen to local officials in the days ahead.
