CLEVELAND (AP) — A public official in Cleveland has reached a milestone for longevity in office.

Sixty-two-year-old Democrat Mike Polensek has set an elected Cleveland city government record of nearly 35 years in office.

He has represented the blue-collar Collinwood neighborhood alongside Lake Erie since 1978.

He reached the mark with Monday's city council meeting, surpassing the record set by Republican Herman Finkle. He served from 1918 until his death in 1952 at age 61.

Fellow council members honored Polensek with a cake and standing ovation.
