DALLAS (AP) — A curator has discovered that a painting long-held in the Dallas Museum of Art's collection was created by George Inness, one of America's greatest landscape painters.
The unsigned oil on canvas titled "In the Woods" and composed around 1850 features a bucolic forest scene.
American art curator Sue Canterbury says the painting has been in the museum's collection for more than 80 years and had been attributed to Asher B. Durand, a mid-19th century artists who was an early influence on Inness.
The painting is on display at the museum with new attribution starting Friday.
Canterbury says the reattribution is significant as it will help "art historians understand what he was doing during this period."
