HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Warnings from forecasters about a possible East Coast super storm next week have governments and utilities on edge, especially after a series of overly long bad weather outages last year and this summer.
Forecasters say leftover parts from a hurricane, a winter storm and a blast of arctic air, appear to be coming together in what they've dubbed "Frankenstorm" a monster combination of high wind, heavy rain, extreme tides and maybe snow.
Power companies from the Southeast to New England are telling independent contractors to be ready to help fix storm damage quickly and are asking employees to cancel vacations and work longer hours.
In Massachusetts, Gov. Deval Patrick has given utilities until today to submit storm plans and said they'd better be ready.
Connecticut was hard-hit last year and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says his warning applies to everyone, "especially the state's utility companies."
