ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — A meal of black bear tasted good but led to a serious bout of trichinosis.
Sean Sullivan says he shot the bear at his remote cabin east of McGrath because the bear was trying to break in. He told the Anchorage Daily News (http://is.gd/ZjZ8uV) that he reported the killing to the Department of Fish and Game and later skinned and stored the meat in freezer bags in the river to keep it cold.
One night he cooked up some of the meat and had it with some peas and rice.
It wasn't until six weeks later that he got an upset stomach, developed flu-like symptoms and started hallucinating.
Sullivan was diagnosed with trichinosis — caused by eating raw or undercooked meat infected with the larvae of the Trichinella worm.
