BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. (AP) — A nursing home for North Carolina military veterans mostly built with money from the federal economic stimulus program is opening in the mountains.
Gov. Beverly Perdue is speaking Thursday at the grand opening of the State Veterans Home in Black Mountain, where more elderly soldiers can find care. About 760,000 veterans live in North Carolina.
The 100-bed facility features private rooms for residents and when fully occupied will employ about 175 workers.
About two-thirds of the cost for it and another 100-bed facility in Kinston came from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
North Carolina now operates a 150-bed nursing home in Fayetteville and a 100-bed center in Salisbury.
