BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — The UAB Health Systems has agreed to help Cooper Green Mercy hospital, which is transitioning away from in-patient care.

WBRC-TV (http://bit.ly/RL0LaI ) reports that Jefferson County manager Tony Petelos made the announcement Thursday that the county came to an agreement with UAB. The hospital will expand to take in patients who need inpatient care.

The county commission voted last month to close the inpatient unit and emergency room at the county owned hospital.

Instead, the county wants to establish a new model featuring an urgent care facility and two clinics focused on preventive care.
