10 emerging writers receive $50K Whiting awards

NEW YORK (AP) — Four playwrights and three fiction writers are among the recipients of this year's Whiting (WHITE'-ing) Writers' Awards that recognizes American writers of "exceptional talent and promise."

The awards, founded in 1985, were announced Tuesday. The 10 winners include playwright Samuel D. Hunter, whose most recent work is "The Few"; and Alan Heathcock, author of the story collection "Volt." Each winner receives $50,000.

Some of the top writers and playwrights of the past 25 years have won Whitings, including Pulitzer Prize winners Tony Kushner, Jonathan Franzen and Michael Cunningham.
