Northern Calif. Walloped by early wintry weather

Tuesday October 23, 2012 3:30 AM

FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A storm from the Gulf of Alaska remains stalled over Northern California, bringing snow to the area's mountains.

The storm also spawned a tornado near Sacramento. And it drenched fans and players at the end of the deciding seventh game of the National League Championship Series, won by the San Francisco Giants.

Only minor damage is reported from the tornado, in the Yuba City area.

Forecasters have been calling for up to 2 feet of snow in the highest elevations in the northern Sierra Nevada. It's a good sign for a state that depends on snow accumulation for its water supply.

Chain controls were in effect yesterday on U.S. Highway 50 southwest of Lake Tahoe. East of Nevada City, five big rigs jackknifed after at least 6 inches of snow accumulated by midmorning.

A forecaster says snow showers are expected to continue into tonight in higher elevations.
