HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey state trooper escaped serious injury when his cruiser and another vehicle collided on Interstate 195, a crash that caused the cruiser to burst into flames.

The trooper and the driver of the other car were both treated for minor injuries after Tuesday's crash, but their names were not disclosed.

Authorities say the crash occurred around 4 p.m. in the eastbound lanes in Hamilton Township (Mercer County), when either the trooper or the driver abruptly stopped in a bid to avoid an unrelated crash that occurred on the highway. The trooper's cruiser caught fire moments later and was soon fully engulfed in flames.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation Tuesday night.
