NH warns hunters about diseased deer

Tuesday October 16, 2012 5:15 AM

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — New Hampshire fish and game officials are warning hunters not to import intact deer carcasses from Pennsylvania because chronic wasting disease has been found in a deer in that state.

New Hampshire bans importing deer carcasses from states where the disease has been detected. To date, the disease has been found in deer or elk in 23 states and provinces. The ban does not apply to deboned meat, antlers, antlers attached to skull caps with no soft tissue attached, upper teeth, hides or capes without an attached head and finished taxidermy mounts.

The ban is intended to reduce the risk of New Hampshire's deer and moose becoming infected. Officials say the disease is an abnormal protein that is very stable and could easily spread from disposal of diseased deer parts.
